Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is becoming one of the fastest-growing eye health concerns globally. As we mark Myopia Awareness Week 2026 from May 18th to May 24th, Beracca Eye Clinic joins the global effort to educate families and communities about the importance of early detection, prevention, and proper management of myopia.
This year’s theme is:
“Start Early, Protect Vision for Life.”
What Is Myopia?
Myopia is a condition in which distant objects appear blurry because light rays entering the eye are focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Children and adults with myopia may:
- struggle to see distant objects clearly
- squint frequently
- move closer to screens or books
- complain of headaches or eye strain
- have difficulty seeing the board at school
While glasses may improve vision, myopia is now recognized as more than just a refractive error.
Why Myopia Is Becoming a Global Concern
The prevalence of myopia continues to rise worldwide.
According to global estimates:
- In the year 2000, approximately 22.9% of the world population had myopia.
- About 2.7% had high myopia.
- By 2050, it is estimated that nearly half of the world population may become myopic.
- Around 10% may develop high myopia.
Although prevalence remains highest in parts of East and South-East Asia, Africa is also experiencing a significant increase in cases.
Studies suggest that myopia prevalence among school children in Africa may rise from 4.7% to 17% by 2050.
This growing trend is why myopia is now considered a major public health concern.
Why Early Detection Matters
High myopia can increase the risk of serious sight-threatening conditions, including:
- glaucoma
- cataract
- retinal complications
- myopic maculopathy
The younger myopia begins, the greater the likelihood that it may progress over time.
At Beracca Eye Clinic, our focus is not only on correcting blurry vision but also on slowing the progression of myopia and protecting long-term eye health.
Risk Factors for Myopia
Some risk factors cannot be changed, while others can be managed.
Non-Modifiable Risk Factors
Family History
Children with one myopic parent are more likely to develop myopia. The risk becomes significantly higher when both parents are myopic.
Age of Onset
Children who develop myopia at a younger age are more likely to experience faster progression.
Gender
Research suggests females may have a slightly higher risk of developing myopia.
Ethnicity
Certain populations, particularly East Asians, have shown higher prevalence rates, though cases are also increasing across Africa.
Modifiable Risk Factors
The encouraging news is that some lifestyle adjustments may help reduce risk and slow progression.
Increase Outdoor Time
Children should spend at least two hours outdoors daily after school whenever possible.
Reduce Prolonged Near Work
Limit excessive screen time and encourage breaks during reading or close-up tasks.
Encourage Healthy Sleep
Adequate sleep supports overall visual and physical development.
Maintain Good Nutrition
Balanced diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains support healthy eye development.
